Key Findings and 13 Actionable Steps to Improve Experiences for Adult Learners
The COVID-19 pandemic upended higher education in many ways, greatly affecting adult learners and those institutions.
Between August and October 2020, UMKC’s Urban Education Research Center (UERC) and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning conducted 18 focus groups with faculty, administrators, and adult learners from 16 of the Kansas City Scholars Postsecondary Network of institutions. The study, made possible with support from The DeBruce Foundation, included 82 faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as 61 adult learners.
The resulting report, “Reaction to Crisis: Adult Higher Education’s Lessons Learned,” captures the voices of adult learners and highlights 13 actionable steps higher education institutions can take to help them navigate unique challenges and provide needed support now and in the future.
On March 2, 2021, partners of the study gathered virtually to announce their findings, share key recommendations, and answer questions from higher education professionals across the nation.
