Hey DeBruce Foundation friends,
This is Alex Oleson, a DeBruce Career Corps member, and I’m writing this in February which also means it’s Black History Month!
When I think of Black History Month, I can’t help but think of all the great Black minds throughout history that have left a lasting impact on the world. Black people across the world and African Americans in this country have made tremendous economic contributions.
As we do our part to highlight Black achievement throughout history and recognize those who contributed and excelled in their field, I challenge everyone to reflect on the skills they offered the world. Or, in other words, what were their top Agilities?
Last week, I picked up the “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” and it became incredibly clear that he was one of the greatest orators of his time; I have no doubt one of his top Agilities was “Selling and Communicating.” He also made tremendous advances in the abolition movement using his Agilities of “Serving and Caring” and “Innovating”.
The Foundation’s Agilities are everywhere and a great lens through which to celebrate Black History Month!

An Agile Approach to Workforce Development
Our workforce development strategies were recently featured by the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City:
“Nearly 59,400 jobs annually between 2020 and 2025 will be available in the agriculture sector of the economy. The question is, how are they going to be filled? Kansas City-based DeBruce Foundation has answers and strategies.”
Equipping Returning Citizens
We love seeing our partners in the news!
SWAGG INC works with citizens returning from incarceration to break the cycle of recidivism.
Their use of career literacy resources, including the Agile Work Profiler, help individuals affirm their value, discover their work skills, and make plans for their future.
Helping Peers and Planning Careers
Recently, DeBruce Career Corps member, Carlos, went above and beyond to help his peers at Rockhurst High School prepare for their career future.
After having taken the Agile Work Profiler and identifying his top work skills and interests, he thought his classmates would benefit from the assessment too.
The initiative he took resulted in helping lead a discussion with his peers and helping them start using the career literacy tools available on Agilities.org too.

Mini Grants for Remake Learning Days
Remake Learning Days Across America is a learning festival that celebrates the many learning opportunities in a community.
Organizations can join in the fun by hosting an event! For nonprofit organizations in the Kansas City region, grants of $250 are available to help offset event costs.
Applications received by 2/25 will receive priority consideration and a chance to double the grant award.
